Building Fluency: The Third Pillar of Reading

Reading fluency is where many children face challenges. They may be great at blending sounds and decoding words, but their reading feels slow, choppy, or lacks expression. Fluency is the bridge between decoding and comprehension, allowing children to read smoothly and understand text effortlessly.

What is Fluency?

Fluency is the ability to read text accurately, at an appropriate speed, and with natural expression. Without fluency, a child may struggle with retention, making comprehension more difficult.

Strategies to Improve Fluency

  1. Silent Blending:
Encourage your child to blend words in their mind rather than out loud. This helps them transition from slow, segmented reading to smoother, more fluid reading.

  2. Cumulative Sentence Reading:

    • Have your child read one word at a time.
    • Repeat the sentence from the beginning after each word.
    • Example:
      • Child: A
      • Parent: A
      • Child: cat
      • Parent: A cat
      • Child: sat
      • Parent: A cat sat
      • Continue until the full sentence is read smoothly.
  3. Repetitive Reading:
Encourage your child to read the same sentence multiple times. With practice, they will develop confidence and speed.

  4. Model Fluent Reading:
Read aloud to your child, emphasizing natural pauses and expression. Then, have them mimic your reading style.

  5. Use Simple Texts First:
Start with short, predictable sentences before progressing to longer, more complex passages.

The Power of Practice

Fluency develops through practice. The more exposure children have to fluent reading techniques, the more natural reading will become for them. Over time, they will read with confidence, speed, and expression—essential skills for comprehension.
